We are rooting for Mare Sheehan to solve Erin McMenamin’s murder Mare of Easttown, of course… however we may be rooting for her a little less a person after what went down in Sunday’s episode.
Mare has custody of her grandson Drew, following her son Kevin died by suicide along with Drew’s drug-addicted mother Carrie ended up in rehab. Last week, Carrie declared that she is clean and she plans to regain custody of her son. This week, Helen let it slide to Drew that he might have to go live with his mom, flatly telling Mare:”She’s the mother. She’ll get custody” Mare went to see Carrie at her halfway home and asked for some time for Drew to complete the school year, but Carrie would like to start her new life with her son immediately. After Mare threatened to inform a judge that Carrie is a unfit mother, Carrie got nasty, telling Mare who”Kevin f–king hated you” and that Drew”deserves a lot better than you”
Later, we saw Mare sneaking into an evidence locker and carrying something with her if she left. Carrie claimed the drugs were put on her — and the chief knows Mare took these drugs from the evidence locker and changed the logs. “Part of me wants to be certain to never put on a badge again,” he explained gravely, putting Mare on leave and requesting her to proceed to grief counseling to take care of her son’s death once and for all. He also took her badge and gun — and ordered her to stay off the Erin McMenamin case. (But all of us know that’s not gon na na happen, though, right?)
“She has not managed to solve himor to fix himand was not able to save him. It manifests itself in these enormous approaches and just infiltrates her world to a very destructive extent. And it makes her make some bad choices, too. What she does with Carrie at the conclusion of [Episode] 3, this is a girl who’s on the absolute outer fringes of real desperation.”
Elsewhere in”Input Number Two”: Kenny confessed to shooting Dylan, however, the child did not actually die (he’s hospitalized, however, and might never walk again); Mare cornered Frank about the rumors that are formulaic, but he angrily insisted he never touched Erin and shot a DNA test to prove it; Mare followed Erin’s severed finger to a park miles off, deducing that she must’ve been murdered there and then dumped at the creek; Colin drunkenly discussed his failed engagement and hit on Mare (!) ; and Mare and Colin interrogated Deacon Mark, who had been the last man to talk to Erin until she expired. He maintained that it had been innocent… but afterwards, we saw the holy man dump Erin’s missing bicycle to the river.
